OpenAI seeks $30B at massive valuation
The AI giant is negotiating a private funding round that could push its value to $1.25 trillion before a planned public listing.

The race to build the world's most powerful artificial intelligence systems has entered a new financial phase. OpenAI is reportedly moving quickly to secure a massive private capital injection.
Sources tell CNBC that the company is working to raise up to $30 billion. This new round would value OpenAI at $1.25 trillion on a pre-money basis. Coatue Management and investors from the United Arab Emirates are expected to lead the effort. The deal is still under negotiation, so the final terms may shift.
This development follows a similar report by Bloomberg from last month. That report suggested a $1.4 trillion valuation for a similar $30 billion raise. The slight difference in numbers reflects the ongoing negotiations between the parties. OpenAI has not commented on the specific figures or the status of the talks.
A key part of the deal involves the UAE investors. The funding is reportedly tied to a separate agreement for additional computing power. This hardware capacity would come from the UAE and support OpenAI's expanding infrastructure needs. Such a combination of capital and compute resources is becoming a standard strategy for major AI labs.
If the $1.25 trillion valuation holds, OpenAI would become the most valuable private company in history. It would also set a high bar for its upcoming initial public offering. The company filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June. That filing came after a March round that valued the ChatGPT maker at $852 billion on a post-money basis.
The high valuation will also impact the broader market. Competitor Anthropic is believed to be closer to a public debut. Reports indicate Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its IPO. The company raised $65 billion in May at a $965 billion valuation. Many viewed that as its final private round before going public. Anthropic also filed confidential IPO paperwork in June. The market is watching closely to see how these two giants price their shares.
The timing of these moves suggests a coordinated push to lock in private capital before public markets test their valuations. The scale of the sums involved is unprecedented for the tech sector. Investors remain eager to back the leading AI players despite the high price tags. The next few weeks will determine if these valuations stand firm or adjust to market conditions.
