Investors Reap Billions From Anthropic’s Soaring Valuation

Early and late-stage backers of the AI firm hold stakes worth billions of dollars ahead of a potential public listing this year.

Anthropic is currently navigating the complex waters of a prospective public offering that analysts expect to occur within the current calendar year. Market projections suggest the company could reach a valuation of up to $2 trillion during this event, a figure that would represent a significant leap from its current standing. This anticipated shift to the public market stands to generate substantial returns for the venture capital firms and individual investors who supported the organization during its earlier growth phases.

Even before the official listing takes place, the financial landscape for these backers is already defined by massive gains. According to data reviewed by Bloomberg, the holdings of many key investors are valued in the billions based on the company’s most recent private market valuation of $965 billion. These figures illustrate the rapid appreciation of capital allocated to the leading AI lab over the past few years, creating a windfall that dwarfs the initial outlays for several prominent entities.

Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, represents one of the most notable individual success stories associated with the firm. PitchBook records indicate that Schmidt participated in the Series A round in 2021, a period when the startup carried a valuation of only $461 million. That early entry has since matured into an approximate one percent ownership stake. At the current private valuation, this position is worth nearly $10 billion, a testament to the compounding effect of early exposure to high-growth technology sectors.

Institutional investors have also secured lucrative positions through large-scale commitments at various stages of the company’s development. Iconiq, for instance, issued a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year. At the time of that transaction, the company was already valued at $183 billion. The value of that late-stage investment has since grown to $17 billion. Observers note that this figure could potentially double once the initial public offering is completed, further cementing the return on this substantial capital deployment.

Menlo Ventures holds a similarly significant footprint in the company’s capital structure. The venture capital firm led the Series D financing round and has cumulatively invested more than $1 billion into Anthropic over time. This sustained financial support has resulted in a stake that is currently valued at $14 billion. The magnitude of this holding underscores the confidence major institutional players place in the long-term trajectory of the AI sector.

Sequoia took a different approach by entering the fold much later in the company’s life cycle. The firm made its first investment in Anthropic earlier this year, after the valuation had already climbed to $380 billion. By committing $3 billion, Sequoia secured roughly one percent of the company. Despite the high entry price, the investment has already more than doubled in value, a remarkable outcome for a late-stage entry in such a competitive market.

Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also holds a position of considerable worth. The group initially invested $35 million during the 2023 Series C round. It subsequently added another $400 million to its commitment, resulting in a stake that is now worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher departed Sound Ventures earlier this year to establish a new venture capital firm, though the original investment remains intact within the portfolio.

Perhaps the most dramatic multiple on investment belongs to Spark Capital. As the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, Spark invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round. At that time, the company’s valuation stood at $5 billion. That initial position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold, reaching a current value of $7 billion. Such a return highlights the extreme volatility and potential reward inherent in backing disruptive technology firms at the right moment.

The convergence of these individual and institutional gains sets the stage for a historic financial event. As the company prepares for its expected listing, the focus will shift from private market valuations to public market performance. For now, the numbers suggest that the early bets and strategic late-stage entries have already paid off in spectacular fashion, leaving little doubt about the financial windfall awaiting these backers upon the final closing of the deal.
